Facebook Goes Meta: Know More About Metaverse
Did you know that the Facebook parent company has been re-branded as Meta? Yes, you heard it right.
What is metaverse?
The term metaverse has become a buzzword in technology and business. Metaverse is sort of a future-forward social hub or virtual environment where users can go inside and interact as avatars rather than just looking at the screen. It is a kind of a 3D world that allows people to meet, work and play by making use of virtual reality headsets, augmented reality glasses, smartphone apps and more. It involves other activities such as shopping and social media as well.
Metaverse provides a set of interconnected digital spaces, letting individuals do things that they cannot do in the actual world and even making them feel that that they are right there with another person even though they might be physically far from the latter.
What can be the reason for Facebook to bet big on metaverse?
Facebook, the largest social network in the world, has invested massively in metaverse since Mark Zuckerberg does not want his company to be known as a social media company only.
“Facebook is an iconic social media brand, but increasingly it just doesn’t encompass everything that we do,” Zuckerberg said on Thursday.
“Today we’re seen as a social media company,” he added, “but in our DNA, we are a company that builds technology to connect people. And the metaverse is the next frontier just like social networking was when we got started.”
Even though it seems that Facebook wants to step towards the future, there are controversies that the reason behind such a decision might be just to create a sort of distraction from the bad press. It is well-known that the brand Facebook has been through constant attack by controversies for encouraging the spread of misinformation and for its opaque policies around user data and thus, we can only guess the reality.
