New Features on Proton Mail

The privacy-focused email service provider Proton, based in Switzerland, has hinted at new features for a substantial upgrade for its core Proton Mail and calendar services.

Although Proton has diversified over the years into cloud storage and VPNs, encrypted email still reigns supreme and is possibly the most intriguing aspect of its most recent disclosure.

In spite of the fact that Proton frequently promotes itself as Google’s antithesis, at least in terms of privacy, the firm has unveiled a busy roadmap for the upcoming months that will bring about a number of new features that are somewhat similar to Gmail. That’s actually a good thing.

As Planned

Gmail is quite useful for users, and it includes an email categorization system that automatically classifies inbound emails by category under various tabs to make it easier for users to find particular types of emails.

Given that categorization inevitably depends on scanning content, this may raise some concerns about how Proton will accomplish this without jeopardizing users’ data privacy. However, the business stated that it is working to execute this in a “completely private fashion” using the sender category.

In other places, Gmail has already provided message-scheduling for a few years. This feature enables users to set up emails to send at a specified time and date, perhaps while they are sound asleep.

Other upcoming features include email reminders, which allow users to set an alert to remember themselves to react at a later time, as well as the ability to “snooze” emails, which accomplishes the same thing. This is comparable to a function that Gmail has had available since 2018.

Proton also announced that it would be introducing new tools to disable email tracking, making it impossible for businesses or malicious individuals to determine when an email was opened and rendering the data useless. This announcement is more in line with Proton’s focus on privacy.

On the web, message content search is only available to premium customers who have paid for it, but on mobile, there aren’t really any options beyond metadata like the subject line. According to Proton, complete message search will soon be added to its mobile apps.

The Proton Calendar App

However, future modifications won’t just affect Proton Mail. Nearly a year after it debuted on Android, the business is getting ready to release a native Calendar app for the iPhone. The Proton Calendar app will also be getting new 3-day and 7-day views that are similar to Google Calendar, as well as a «full-agenda» view that shows a day’s scheduled activities in a chronological list with limitless scrolling.

Integrations

With its Proton Drive cloud storage service just going into beta on the web, Proton is now planning to roll out deeper synergies across its product range as it broadens its line of offerings. For instance, email attachments larger than Proton Mail’s 25MB limit will be immediately uploaded to Proton Drive, where the receiver can retrieve the file using a secure link.

Proton isn’t yet providing any precise release dates, but it has stated that Proton Mail’s email scheduling and tracking blocker, as well as the new iPhone Calendar app and the 3-day and 7-day Calendar views, will be available within the next month.

As a Digital Marketing Agency in Mauritius, we are eager to see new features landing in at various times throughout the upcoming years.
