Twitter adds an official badge. Then Elon Musk changed his mind
Undoubtedly, many controversial issues have arisen since the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk due to the application of his improvisational management style across the company. This week, Twitter announced two new different verification check marks that users can have displayed on their profiles.
This was a separate form of user verification rather than the blue check mark and was meant to be added to high-profile accounts such as government accounts, commercial companies, media outlets as well as some public figures. It began rolling out early Wednesday morning but by late morning, users started to notice that the badge had disappeared.
Then in response to a tweet about the disappearances, Elon Musk announced, “I just killed it.” He further tweeted: “Please note that Twitter will do lots of dumb things in coming months. What works will be kept, and what doesn’t will be changed. Such acts surely worsen the unrest at Twitter, one of the most important social media platforms in the world.”
On the other hand, under the new plan, the blue check mark will now denote that a user has paid the monthly charges of $8, rather than one that identifies public figures. Wednesday saw the following tweet from Twitter’s product manager Esther Crawford;
“The new Twitter Blue does not include ID verification – it’s an opt-in, paid subscription that offers a blue checkmark and access to select features. We’ll continue to experiment with ways to differentiate between account types.”
